I believe the New Merc is made by Tohatsu. It is a good engine. Don't know about Honda except my Fortrax was awesome.

Tohatsu makes a lot of "other brand" small motors now. Unclear about what though.

I would decide between honda or yamaha. Hondas are the best motors out there whether you're talking outboard, motorcycle, auto, lawnmower or anything else. They make you pay for dependability. Yamahas' run a close second in my opinion and are a bit less expensive. Don't have any experience with mercs.

When I bought my 9.8hp 4 stroke nissan in 05? I was told it was made by nissan/tohatsu, Then the following year nissan began to make all Merc small motors up to 30/40hp that had been made, not by merc, but by yamaha. I know 06 thru 08 merc small motors were made by nissan, as per local merc dealer I trade at. Don't know about 09 but I would guess its still nissan? Nissan has been good & trouble free, great kicker, but if You can afford the Honda go for it as all they ever made was 4 stroke's and they are great motors.

Thanks For The Info Guys. I Was Kinda Leaning Towards The Honda
But Wanted Some Convincing That I Was Right. Have A 9.8 Four Stroke
Merc For The City Lakes. It's A Good Motor But Am Not Totally
Satisfied Which Is Why I Posed The Question.

    4 Stroke....Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki
    2 Stroke....Yamaha, Evinrude, Merc

    In these orders...for me anyways..lol.

I would like to have a Honda or Yammie 4stroke...but the more I read and the more I hear I'm leaning towards the Honda. But WHO KNOWS when that will be?!?! lol

My neighbor has a 2007 Honda 4 stroke 90. Been to doctor a bunch of times.
    Any make/models can have probs.

I wish there was a RELIABLE unbiased comparison chart we could go by such as consumer reports. I have no faith in any magazine report that sells advertisements then pushed a certain "brand" and, I have less faith in dealer being honest about "brands'.......Wonder why?

Two thumbs up on what CanePole says...there really isn't a place to do that at...I love consumer reports. Sometimes I wonder if I should just keep my 22yr old Johnson GT150....there is a reason she is still purring! lol Built right!!

Cane Pole makes a whole lot of sense of this point. I'm with him.

You know it is really just a craps shoot sometimes. I have been burned before by Consumer Reports. There is just too darn much variation from model to model, factory to factory, and part to part, and worker to worker. Very frustrating at times. Awhile back our toaster went kaput. I started looking at customer reviews for a new one. For every person that said this model or that was a great toaster there would be 2 who said it was the worst toaster ever and not to waste your money. I finally concluded it was impossible to make toast and started eating biscuits instead.
