    Default New to the Forum

Hi everyone, new here and really excited to have found this
place. I am a compulsive / obsessive crankbait troller and it is nice
to see some other people on here who troll cranks. I love it so that
even when the conditions are better for another style of fishing, I still
troll... For me, it became an addiction, at least after I started figuring
it out. I tryed it off and on for several years with no success, then
one day after work a fellow took pity on me - we went to the lake
and he showed me some of what I was doing wrong - enough to start
catching a few and learning as I went. Been trolling crankbaits for
about 4 years now and I'm HOOKED! Used to side-pull jigs Gant style,
but burned out after a couple years. I usually fish Bay Springs or Pickwick,
occasionally Sardis or small state park lakes. I was equally pleased to
see talk about crankbaits and not one mention of my "pet" lure - whew!
Bandits are only the begining... More later, Jeff

Hello J White and welcome. Lots of fishy fishing facts here. Would like to learn more from you about trolling crankbaits. What's the biggest thing you've caught? What's the weirdest thing you've caught? Better trolling in am or pm or evening? Whatever? Tell us more.

Well, as for the biggest, I've caught several bass in the 8 lb range,
and some big drum - some over 10 lbs no doubt. Smallmouth up to 5,
blue cat, flatheads, channels, bream, sauger, yellow perch, gar, chain pickerel, whites and hybrids, if it swims it will hit a crankbait!
As for the weirdest, caught a couple of crappie pushing 3 that had shad
tails sticking out of their mouths - can't resist pulling them out with pliers-
shad over 7". Have had crappie's tails slashed off by gar before I could
boat them. I have been at the lower lake, Sardis every October 1st for
the last 9 years or so - me and two friends camp a few days and snag
big paddelfish - 46 lbs. my personal biggest, but LOTS of 30-40s.
My take on best fishing times is that I fish every chance I get for as
long as I can - time, weather, fishing forecast be darned! I have
noticed the fish turn on and off at different times on different days.
I suspect it has to do with Solar/Lunar times, but as I said, I just fish!
I do regard it as a good omen though if I have to dodge squirrels on the
way to the lake! Don't trust the one about cows - standing up eating=
fish biting - Cows lie! My next frontier is learning how to consistently
catch sauger at pickwick in the summer - I hear it can be done, but I
have not devoted nearly enough time to it - too many crappie to catch!

    Exclamation Hey JW ....

    Welcome to the "Crappie.com" family!!

You are dead on about "cows lying" ... !! (got a good chuckle out of that one! I've been debunking that theory since my GrandPa used to mention it - back in the 60's ....LOL!!)

But, what's this about "squirrels" ?? I see more squirrels out along the roads, when there's a light, misty rain. Used to wait until such a weather pattern presented itself, before going squirrel hunting. Now you're telling me that I should have been going Crappie fishing, instead ? .....LOL!!

And you are telling the straight skinny, about having a good "plug knocker" with you, if you troll cranks very often Mine cost me the grand sum of around $8 (back in the 70's) ... probably saved me (& my fishing partners) well over $400 in cranks, since - and I don't troll cranks that much, either!! Rarely, if ever, for Crappie .... and sparingly, at best, for Hybrid Stripers & White Bass. But, I do throw them quite a bit (day or night) for Bass. There's just a lot of standing, submerged timber in the lakes I fish, here in KY. (and I bet some of them look like a Bass anglers Christmas tree ).... luck2ya .........cp
