Actually I used to catch Crappie all the time as a kid fishing. I would walk to creeks
nearby my house, and no one ever told us kids what they were... Or they assumed
we really knew...

I just thought they were funny looking bluegill fish, with wide mouths, and no color.
And of course I was using the ol' standby - the beetlespin!

My Dad and I use to fish for Red Breast & Bream in the Satilla River in SE Georgia. When I was a young boy I caught my first Crappie. I didn't know what it was. They were rare in that river and they called them sun fish or speckled trout.

Caught my first crappie fishing with my dad when I was 9 or 10 fishing in a farm pond, there weren't many in that pond so it was always a nice suprise when you pulled one in.

I'll chime in as a new member.

At 31, I'm addicted to bass fishing. Fish a few times a week. All this insanity got it's start from crappie fishing.

As a young boy, the father of an uncle would take me on a North Florida lake crappie fishing. We would fish from his john boat while he sculled and we dragged minnow and minnow/jig combos for those beautiful fish.

Today, I am climbing back to my roots, and with new technology, and the passing of my old teacher, I'm eager to move forward with new techniques and continue to experience this great sport of fishing.

Great question!

I would think sometime in the late 60's with my Dad in the same creek I fish now. I have a picture setting on the desk in front of me, taken in either 1970 or 1971 with him holding a big metal fish basket full of crappie and me holding two big slabs.

Lake Herrington in Kentucky in the spring of 1977.

1965 Wolf Bayou near Portageville, MO. Just a snakey oxbow off the Mississippi River, but it used to give up some hogs.

1962 on Black Lake in upstate NY. Have an old pic my dad took. Rental boat and I was 6 yo.

Good subject. I can't say I remember my first Crappie, but have many memories of my neighbor taking me out in his boat as a pre-teen of 11, and going with him on many night stalks, most of which were in the dead of winter. I thank my folks for allowing me to go.

and that would be sometime in the mid to late 1950's  :D

The lake would definitely have to be Herrington Lake, Ky.
Mode of transportation would be a rental flat bottom wooden boat w/10HP Johnson outboard.
My Grandparents would be the ones responsible for getting me into the pursuit of Crappie, and fishing in general. I've been told that we did alot of creek fishing, too, when I was much younger ... but my memories of that are faded & spotty. Though I do remember doing some Bluegill/Warmouth fishing at a spot called Sleepy Hollow, here in KY (somewhere :p )

And just to cover all the bases : my first Crappie for 2008 would have come from Watts Bar lake, TN. this past April, on my annual Spring trip.

I'd have to talk with my Dad but it would of been in the late 60's on a lake near Wichita, Kansas as my Dad was stationed there with the Air Force.

Geese, first ever was when I was a kid so over 50 years ago at the local Country Club lake in Orange Texas, but for this year I caught my first this year on Toledo Bend and it was probably Feb. using a big black marabou jig with a worm tail actually fishing for bass.

"Mr. Hinton's creek" is what we called the feeder creek of Big Bear creek (KY. lake) in the early 60's because our nest door neighboor (Mr. Hinton) had a cabin above this creek where my dad would take us fishing.

I can vividly remember my dad casting his 'bottom rig' down the creek and pulling in pollywog catfish and bream.

Growing up in a small town and knowing everyone in town, two houses down from us was an older couple that had no kids of their own, so they took me in as their own. Mr. Martin was in his late 60's and he would have me spend the night with them so we could get an early start going fishing. He had a 63 Ford Fairlane and we would load all the fish gear in the back seat. He had a farmer that would let us go across his cow pasture and drive down to the Saluda River. We would spend all day walking the banks fishing red worms under a cork for what ever would bite. He was the one that got me hooked on fishing and that summer of 68 was when I caught my first crappie. Mr. Martin passed away in 83 but a part of him is with me every time I go fishing. I have been hooked on crappie fishing every since that first crappie and it is because someone took time to take a kid fishing.:)

I'm new to fishing and as a kid I remember going on a fishing trip but I didn't fish. My first crappie was this June on Lewisville lake. I was fishing with some friends that also moved from California and since then I have been fishing at least 1-2 times a week(when the weather permits).
