I have been experimenting ALOT with getting the right paint combo and techniques on putting eyes on jigs. Now that I'm getting really close....I wonder if it even matters to the fish, if it has eyes or even painted at all...
I've been catching fish on plain jigs forever...they just don't look as cool in the tackle box.

Do what ever makes you more confident. Millions of crappie have been caught
on unpainted heads.
Personally , I paint my heads , but don't bother with eyes.

i guess it is just up to the individual and the confidence that you have in the bait. my partner swears that he catches them just as good with a plain lead head and hook. while i feel like i catch twice as many on a painted head. i dont put eyes on them so i dont know if that helps?

Either way you go, those are some nice looking painted jig heads!

I never used painted jig heads unless they are roadrunners. Does it really make a difference? Who knows. It cost more to buy painted ones just to get lost in the brush. I am sure I could buy my own paint but that takes time and I would rather be fishign than painting.

i like the paint and eyes also, but after i beat it all off on bridge piers or brush i still catch just as many fish.

I use to like the painted but now that I make my own I don't mess with the painted heads. I really don't think its matter the body to me means the most.

Most of the jigs I fish with have no eyes and I paint them mostly because I don't want them getting darker and darker and then getting that white stuff on the lead.

I do believe that eyes may help, but to use a lot of time making them does not seem like something that will pay off. I think a plane black eye will do as well as any other multi-color eye and most are for the fisherman IMHO!

Have fun with those eyes!!! I'm still perfecting the "oh s**t" look, the beat-up look, the pirate, and the ever famous cartoon dead-eyes (the ones that look like this " + + " )..

Eyes or no-eyes.... you're still gonna catch crappie!!

I paint some jigheads with fluorescent paint like the one in Skip's picture. I use a lot of those for shellcracker, dressed with a worm. I know it's not crappie, but I use the same heads for them. I don't mess with eyes.
That being said, I also carve wooden lures, and wouldn't think of one without eyes on it. Just makes them look finished.

I like paintin' mine. Gives me somethin to do on miserable winter week-ends especially. I don't get too carried away tho. Bright Pink, Green Chartruese, and White Powder paint. I'm NOT doin this for sale, so a set of hemostats and a lighter are all I need. I also put "Platnum" fingernail polish on unpainted heads to give a "Silver" head, and it also "Pearlizes" White.
I put eyes on, but I keep that simple too! A good "Sharpie" Marker does the job. You can "freshen" the eyes simple enough if the it lasts long enough, or I still have it, when the eyes need "refreshing"

I guess it depends on whether you are catching fish or catching fisherman with the jig apperance. Minnows have eyes and predator fish attack the eye area. I have more personal CONFIDENCE with jigs with eyes on them and besides they are prettier.

Nice job.

I read where Capps-Coleman use plain lead heads. That being said, I like the head to match the end of the skirt and I prefer an eye on the head. I suppose it would matter more in very clear water. I think it helps, so the extra cost is worth it to me, just for the extra confidence. So what if I spend 20 MORE bucks a year.

I even thought of doing a jig face that looks like the jig would be trying to attack the attacking fish!!! hehehe

I think it is a matter of location sometimes. I have found that i catch 100 to 1 on a non painted head over a painted head. Actually tried switching when i was catching fish and they would not touch the painted head at all. The very few times I have had success was in muddy water and the bright head helped with visability.
