    Default Light action fishing reels

I'm looking for a new light action reel. Seems that everything I see is ultra-light and then medium action. Any recommendations on a "light action" reel. Thanks---Pooch

    Hey pooch,
I been using a Mitchell 308X gold for a couple of years and like it pretty well. Its kind of a tweener not really a ultra and not a medium either. Its a little pricy for some at 49.95 but has a smooth drag and has held up pretty well for me.

    Hey Pooch,

It's hard to beat Shimano reels for their cost and they come in several different sizes in each series. I like their 500 size for jigging and use 1000s and 2000s for my slip float rigs.

    Default Just Bought

I just purchased 4 Diawa CX80 spincast rigs. They are medium light underspin reels. They are pretty tough even though they are mostly plastic. Grand kids ain't broke one yet, but have managed to drop several in the lake. Have to replenish, so I choose this one as it has been so reliable over the years. Also cheap, about $15.00 at Cabelas or Wal-Mart. I use them on my crappie poles, and on my light (5-6 ft) poles. They are a little heavy for crappie poles (9 oz.) but are tough. Also have some DX40's. I swear by them, not at them. I have some expensive rigs, but most of the time I just use these little jewels.

    For what it is worth,

I agree with Jerry. I have 6 rods for tightlining. I have 2 shakespeare, 2 quantum and 2 shimano 500"s. The shimanos are the best. I also use the 1000's and 2000's in other applications.

I'm using Okuma's AV-15. It's an excellent tweener reel. The only drawback is it doesn't hold a lot of line. It's light and has a smooth drag.

Pooch, I am not as impressed as some of the others on here with the shimano reels. I have tried a few, and they just didnt hold up well for me. Also, the performance wasn't that great either. I have found the Quantum reels to be my brand of choice. Notice I said choice. We all have opinions, and thats what you asked for, or ideas anyway, about the same. I think the quantum reels have good casting and smooth reeling, and they hold up well. I have caught so many fish on one that the abbrasiveness of the fishing line has cut halfway through the metal on the line return area. It now needs to be replaced, but it sure was a good one. We all have our own favorites, and we are all right in our own experiences as to what works for us. We have given you several responses to look at and select from. If money allows, you might want to try getting 2 or 3 different ones, and letting your experience lead you to your choice. Good luck to you, and always good luck to everyone who uses this site. The weather is cooling down, feels like football time. ROLL TIDE
