I went to Bull Shoals Lake a couple of days ago, and brought home 15 crappie, 2 barely-legal bass, and 3 good-size bluegill.
With the unseasonably cool weather we have been having in S.W. Missouri, the surface water temp is now down to 79. I found the crappie around brushpiles in 15-20 feet of water. Since it was windy, I was slow-trolling and drifting with a 1/8 oz. lead head and a Swimmin' Minnow jig.
Every crappie I caught was a black crappie, and this is on a lake where 80% of them are white crappie. I haven't seen a white crappie for months and don't know where they all are. Still suspended in deep water I guess - I can't find them.
I was using my 5' ultra-light rig, and that's a lot of fun. Even those 13" Kentucky bass give you a tussel on that outfit. I'll be going again, and I think it's shaping up to be a good fall season on that lake. - Sam
