    Default The Day After Thanksgiving

Headed out bright and early, hitting our first lake at sunrise. This old standby was tougher than tough, allowing us to catch only a couple fish with an 8 1/2" being the largest crappie. I fished the same lake this fall for crappies and couldn't catch a one. Something's up here, as I usually do pretty good. It does has a history of freezing out every once in a while so who knows? The problem is, I fished it in the spring, catching crappies of the dock and never saw (or smelled) any dead fish anywhere.

Anyway, the luxury of fishing in Itasca County is the abundance of available water. We packed up and headed down the road a piece and ended up finding a pretty good bite. A lot of the fish were on the small side but we did catch a couple in the 12 - 13 inch range. Also, 6" of ice seems to be the norm on these smaller lakes. Next weekend I'll be using a snowmobile and be able to cover more territory.

Heading out in the early morning

    Fishing was tough.

The next lake provided some good action. Here's Dave K with a 13" plus crappie.

    Fish on!

Blake displays two of the largest crappies of the day.
