I guess if a welding rod will work, i guess a hammer, screwdriver or sledgehammer will work. They were yanking your chain. My opinion.

kygorski......I read an article in a fishing magazine years ago describing that method. It was in the Tips section. It was used like a "dropshot rig" to fish in heavy brush and trolling, supposedly to stop hanging weights on bottom and brush piles. Sketches were showing the rod trolling and fishing heavy cover. The first time I saw "Lindy's New Weight" ( about a 3 inch lead weight 1/4" dia. with a bend in it.) I immediately thought back to that article and realized it was the same principle, only shorter. He's made some money on it, but I've still never had call to try it.

I just so happen to have such a rig. Don't use it as much now since I seldom use minnows.

Back in August and September of 2001 this was a real killer up at Smithville Lake on the submerged tree line on the Trimble area of Smithville Lake.
Three of us were fishing on a bluebird day and we had our limits (15 each) by 8:45 a.m. and were trying to catch larger and and cull.

The Kansas City Airport is just a few miles to the southwest of Smithville and on that clear blue day it was noticed that the jets had made big circles in the sky. We didn't have a inkling of what was going on. That day happened to be Sept 11, 2001. Another boat came by and wanted to know if we had a cell phone, which we didn't, since his battery had run down and he had relatives in NY City. To say the least a wounderful fishing day was spoiled by the actions of some terrible evil subhuman creatures.

Here are some pictures of my weldrod rig. Anyhow hope they show up.

I use them with a bait caster so that once it is lowered to what I think is the working depth I will slowly lower it a turn or two using my thumb. Once I get it to the bottom I slowly wind it back up through the water column.

After using it a while you will be able to feel it if the minnows get off the hooks.

Once hooked the weldrod keeps the crappie from wrapping you up. I like to find the thickest cover I can find to lower this rig into.

Some of the other fellows that use this don't use the second hook on the top edge of the weldrod. Once you get the fish to the surface it will usually skake the other minnow off.

By using braid you will very seldom loose your rig on a hangup. You just straighten out the hook. Also the braid allows you to feels the minnows flop around and you lower and raise the rig.

I have even caught fish on this in open water just using it like I was tightlinging. Even caught a small walleye this way.

The way we were working this at Smithville was to tie up to a tree top catch maybe 4 or 5 crappie and move on to the next tree when you were not catching anymore.

Anyhow I find this a enjoyable method of catching crappie.

I see said the cronic viagra user.Since any good idea can be improved or ruined, I am in the process of making my own welding rod rig.But I'll be using about a 2 ft long or longer rod, and 50 lb braided line. The thing about that Lindy snagless sinker, its an idea that has been around for quite some time.Used it for steelhead fishing, it was a piece of clear surgical tubing, with a swivel at the top and a piece of lead or a nail at the bottom forced into the tubing, its used primarily on a dropper, and its darn near snag proof.Use igt on rip rap, or small or large boulders.

Gooch as for clear water I don't know. Don't have much clear water around here.
