I would swear that some years ago I heard/read a story about a lake in Louisiana or Mississippi where a drilling platform on the lake drilled down into a undergound saltmine and emptied the lake very suddenly.

Surly some of you folks from that area could verify that this isn't sort of hullicanation from my twisted mind.

Every now and then while I'm on the water this thought crosses my mind as I consider what a pain this would be to leave ones boat sitting high and dry in some mud flat out in the middle of the lake.

Let me know if this is true or not.

LBM I saw a special on the discovery or history channel about that. I think it was in Lousiana and there was a oil rig that was drilling in an area they were not supposed to or doing something wrong and they penetrated some aquifer or something. It drained a huge lake in about a hour. It was literaly sucking 100 year old oak trees down the hole like a turd in the toilet. That would be a terrible way to die to be fishing and be swallowed up by the earth.

I also remember seeing that special on Discovery Channel. It was some type of drilling operation. That would be so wild, and scary for someone on the lake. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be on the lake if the dam broke. Just hope the motor doesnt die.

The same thing happened just about a year or so ago somewhere. I cant remember what state, but alot of people built nice waterfront homes on the lake and then it went dry almost overnight. Their property value went way down and they said it would cost alot of money to fix the problem. I dont know whatever come of it though.

Back when I lived in Oklahoma, a new lake was built north of oklahoma city. I wanna say arcadia lake. The okies can help me with that though. Any way, DNR had stocked it , and was going to be opening the lake the following year. It developed a sink hole and drained the lake down to a pond and creek system again. They had to fix and restock, big dollars lost on that deal. To my knowledge the lake has been open for several years now though and the fish are thriving.

Arcadia Lake is open and is a beautiful lake. I've never heard about it draining, but then I don't live all that close to it.

The dam on the Sapulpa Reservoir broke a few years ago and still hasn't been fixed. It remains empty. Pity, it's only a couple miles from my house, but there's not a drop of water in it anymore.
