Default How to properly freeze crappie/fish

    Hey everyone.

I've ran into an abundance of crappie over the past week and have about 7 quart bags full of crappie. I've noticed after a couple days they appear to be getting some form of ice on them. Is that just from the excess water in them? Is it okay or is it freezerburn?

My friend suggested freezing them in some water with salt. I am using freezer bags too. Suggestions are welcome.

mano I always use salt....Always.....maybe a teaspoon per quart bag. I put about 10 fillets in each quart bag and fill it up until the fillets are submerged. You do not want any out of the water or else they will freezerburn. Usually this is about 3/4 full of water. I then zip it shut and push all air out and in the freezer they go. I do buy good heavy ziploc bags. The cheap ones will tear.

Vacumn pack the only way to go. Saves lots of room and keeps a long time.

i agree w/ the vac guys, but if you have to freeze them in water place the bags in a 9 x 13 cake pan til frozen to avoid a mess in the freezer

We use Blue Bonnet tupperware. We save the margarine containers. Fill with fish and cover with water, no salt. Cover bowl top with saran, Then snap on lid. Stacks good too. Cheap too. Works too. When I say we, I mean Honey too.

Here is how I freeze my crappie, more like when I get lucky and catch some.

I call it 'Poor Mans Vacum Pack'....Put however many filets you want in any size zip lock bag. Take a long straw and insert into bag and zip shut all the way till you meet the straw. Start sucking air out of the bag by sucking on straw, if you need to take a breath just pinch off straw. Keep sucking until you get all the air out. When done just pull straw out quickly and finish zipping shut.

    It works great!!
