    Default Hello from NY.

Hey guys. I'm trying to get into crappie fishing but I have a hard time catching them. The ones I do catch are monsters but I can't catch them consistently. I fish a decent sized lake, very deep with a ton of drop offs. I usually use plastic white grubs on a lead head or other small jigs. Should I be casting out and retrieving or dropping the jig down right off the side of the boat and jigging? Here's some pics of two crappie that I caught. The first was in a 14'' I caught in June, and the second was a 16 3/4" 3lber I caught last fall.

Welcome to the board. You got some nice fish in the pics. Ask yourself what was you doing when you caught those fish? I would fish the drop offs, start out working the deepest drops and work to the bank. Casting or jigging, its all about what works for you the best.

Thanks. Well the first I caught on a nightcrawler right next to a dock using a bobber. The second I caught while I was fishing for trout, casting a white grub lead head from shore over a drop off, letting it sink and then retrieving it slowly while twitching it. I also caught a nice 14'' a month ago while trout fishing using a yellow Rooster Tail. I just can't seem to catch many doing this. I'm gunna go out to Walmart today and pick up some more small jigs in different colors, then later I'll take the boat out and try some jigging.
