    Question Arkansas black nose?

Was just reading a fishing report on Watts bar lake in Tenneesse. Thay where talking about white crappie and black crappie and recently stocked "Arkansas black nose crappie". Can anyone tell me more about this fish and do you have a photo of one.

You must be reading some "old" literature :D .... I've been catching Arkansas Blacknose Crappie from Watts Bar, for decades :p

Seriously .... they were stocked in WB a long time ago. Maybe they're still stocking them at WB, and that's why they refer to "recently stocked". Haven't caught any monsters, yet ... biggest was around 1.5lb.

Suffice it to say, they're just a regular Black Crappie with a genetic marker that creates a black stripe running from the bottom lip, up between the eyes, and ending at the front of the dorsal fin. They're native to the White River, in Arkansas, hence the "Arkansas" moniker ... but, most people just call them Blacknose. They were originally used by DNR biologists, to stock small impoundments for studies. Nowadays, they're stocked in many places. We have them in KY, in a few lakes.

This previous thread has some good pics of them : http://www.crappie.com/crappie/main-...crappie-2.html

The Arkansas Blacknose Crappie is a Black Crappie with a double recessive gene, the racing stripe. They do occur naturally in the wild but rare. Most game and fish departments who raise and stock crappie force this double recessive so they can conduct studies later. Obviously, the study is a one time deal once they have been introduced. But, they can continue to stock them as they wish. We were fortunate on Lake Gresson recently with a 225,000 stocking of fingerling blacknose last November then another 15,000 yearlings in February.

I talked to a Biologist a few years back and if I rember correctly he said that they were hybrids. The funny thing is that I've caught them all over Texas, in lake Travis,Cedar Creek,Eagle Mountain,Lake Worth and Lake Lewisville. Caught some real little ones and have seen one that almost weighed 2lbs.
