Default Do crappie eat other fishes eggs

I was fishing yesterday around a large deadfall tree and caught 30 fish all were close to balls of fish eggs. I thought the water was too deep for the eggs to be crappie eggs,so is why I thought they were possiblly eating them.
The fish were bitting yesterday, The fish will bite tomorrow,,, today I must buy my fish

    Question "balls of fish eggs"

I don't think fish eggs are laid in clumps, but rather are sprayed out into the nest as single eggs (although in mass numbers).

Are you sure they weren't frog eggs, or some Bryozoa ( http://www.co.thurston.wa.us/health/...df/bryozoa.pdf )

I don't think Crappie eat eggs of other fish, as a rule, but I wouldn't put it past them :p

The fact that you said you were fishing a "large deadfall tree", makes me think that's the single biggest reason for the amount of fish there. That's especially true if the tree is extended out into relatively deep water. And it's a "normal" place to find Bryozoa colonies.

If it should happen to be Bryozoa ... take heart ... that's a very good sign that the water is in good shape. They don't do well in polluted waters.

Thanks, that looked just like them. The crappie were all caught as close to them as I could get, but didn't catch a single fish out from the clusters.

My confusion came from my Paw Pa. Back in the 60's, those things were on every stump in Lake O the Pines. He always told me they were crappie eggs. I later learned they were not, but, I never knew what they were until this thread.
    Thanks
