My motor would not start the other day while fishing. Finally got back to the landing (4 hrs) using my trolling motor & drifting with the wind. Took the boat to my mechanic. I had a big gob of fishing line in behind my prop which had pulled out the seal on my lower unit. Lower unit siezed not repairable. Cost of replacement $3337.83 + labor. Moral of the story don't throw your old line or birds nests in the water. Not my line I bring mine home & throw it away. It was covered by insurance ($100 deductable) Did lose the use of the boat for 3 weeks.

If any of you live near a BPS store, they have a bin for disposing/recycling old line.
I use it any time I re-spool or have to cut out a bird nest.

I hate it when people throw line in the water. Each time I return from the lake I check my lower unit. I developed this habit after an incident similar to yours. I hope if I pick enough to damage the seal I will notice the oil leak before serious damage happens. I believe the newer models are better protected but they are still not perfect.

Don't forget to check your trolling motor props when checking the big motor prop.

Some of the problem isn't discarded line, but line breaking at the rod end. One of the reasons I am not sure 100% knot strenth is a good idea if you do not have a short, lesser poundage, leader on.

i found a canadian goose walking on one leg. after watching it for a while on the dock i noticed the other leg was pinned up against it's stomach by a wad of fishing line. after using a coat to throw over the goose to catch it i removed the line. i guess it had been on their for a while because it still couldn't us its leg.

fishing line thrown overboard hurts not only fishermen and their equipment.

I check my props every time before I use my boat.

I think lots of folks don't intentionally throw line in the water, it's more often broken off. That can't be helped too much, but whenever I respool or something I bundle the line up and run a knife through both ends, breaking it up into less than 1' pieces.
