    Default 3 WT Fiberglass?

A friend is interested in a 3 wt rod in fiberglass. Anyone know of any inexpensive sources?

    Define "inexpensive". :D

I would expect to pay at least $300 for a new rod from a good builder. Two very good builders are Dave Lewis:

    ... and Mark Steffen

The Diamondglass rods are also very good and are similarly priced.

For less $$$, you might be able to pick up a good used rod. Check out the "For Sale" section here.

    I'd also check ebay.

Does it HAVE to be fiberglass? There are lots of reasonably-priced graphite rods on the market. Steve Gibson is a TFO rep, and they make several nice 3wts. I've never cast it, but the Cabela's Three Forks 3wt has a cult following, and it's only $50.

Hey, thanks for the information. I will steer him to the websites. He is a fiberglass fly rod fan. His opinion is all the graphites are stiffer than the same wt rod in fiberglass. Personally, I prefer the graphites.

I understand completely. Many people really like the slower action of glass. And it's cheaper than bamboo!

I got my 2/3 wt Eagle Claw fiberglass rod and reel on ebay for $31.50. It works great.

I will tell my friend that it wouldn't hurt to monitor ebay for what he wants. Also, after some looking around- I think a 3 wt graphite needs careful choosing if he decides to go to graphite. Got the impression "good" 3 wt graphites are not to be had for under a 100.

I think the Cabela's Three Forks might be the exception. I've heard people rave about that rod for years.

I note they remodeled the series in 2008, but state they kept the action for the 3 wt the same. Will tell my friend he should check that one out if he decides to look at graphite 3's.

I saw that, too. That says a lot. They don't want to alienate the many fans of that rod.
