I have too use a bucket most of the time went I'm longline trolling. My bucket had a 1inch hole cut right in the center of it.This way it still slow me down to the speed I want and it makes it a lot easy to lift out of the water.

I always have a couple of buckets in my boat. Not sure how one one inch hole may help I am not about to wait for 5 gallons of water to drain out of a 1 inch hole. I don't lift the bucket when full of water simply tip it and lift. Wind speed plus weight of your boat all come in to factor as to how much a bucket can slow your drift.

I use drift socks. To me it works much better then the 5 gallon bucket method. The 5 gallon bucket works though and I would say cut a hole in it. Drift socks have a hole in them at the top of it.
