Here is a Frabil E-Z CHECKER I store on the side of the rod box with a screw-in eyelet. Handy and always in place.

I have a couple of them and took a piece of noodle and tied on each with a washer to hold it on the line. I did that because I had one fly out of the boat last year and it's almost impossible to recover. Now if one flies out not only will it float it has a big chartreuse piece of noodle like a cork.

Yes you have to make sure the fish slides all the way to the bottom and they will stop short if not careful. I am lucky though as my wife is the JP court clerk so I know the Judge, LOL! I am always legal anyway though. If he is 9 7/8" he goes back in the water!

Buy yourself a key chain float hook to it and toss it in the livewell that you dont have to worry about it flying out and all you have to grab is the float. And it keeps it nice and clean being in the water.

Be careful I have caught a few Black crappie that are way to thick to allow the crappie to slide all the way down. And they will like 1/2" touching. That could cost a ticket.
Seen the newer ones Monday and like them. That is the ones that Canepole posted the link to. Tom they have them at Gander Mt in Jackson.

I got one in the boat somewhere.:) I got both types, but like this 'un mostest.

I like the fish masher/squeezer that keep them fishes from flopping and you can scoop the fishes out the live well with it too. Works pretty good and you can put big fish in it too.

I've been thinking about getting one of those. I've got marks on the front of my boat at nine inches, but it's slick there and I lost a keeper(just over nine) today. It was his lucky day, and that's cool. I sometimes want to check one for the heck of it. I'm not gonna like losing a bigger fish like that.

Ain't big enough for my fishes.:)Ditto here, also. 12" fish has too much girth at the shoulder-to-dorsal / anal fin area (too thick and too tall). This part bottoms out in both of the checkers shown here. Had to get a Dremel and cutting tool to open up big windows on the Frabil at the top and bottom in the shoulder-to-dorsal / anal fin area to relieve the tight fit.

I use what Cane Pole uses. That way when I hand my wife a fish, she doesn't have to touch it to put it in the livewell. If it has to be "squinted at" to tell if it's legal, it goes back. That small, not enough to filet.

I have tried a lot of measuring devices and the frabill ez is everything but easy. It is close to impossible to put the fish in the narrow pocket head first while holding it by the lips. My partner and I have been using the fish taco with a lot of success. It is handy and made of light weight aluminum but sturdy.

The ez looks like a good idea but is not as convenient a tool in actual application.

If you are catching white Crappie they work OK but the blacks in our area are too fat to go all the way down in. I like the Fish Taco, it's easy to put the fish in and hold on to and easy to get the fish out. Just My opinion.

the new grip and check hasn't let the bottom 1/2 inch in to check for the 12" fish required at Sardis lake, i've had to check against the outside back of checker for marginal fish. shoulder girth of white and i suppose black crappie to big on 11 1/2" fish
had plenty this year that wouldn't go all the way into either checker well enough and a 50 cent ruler at walmart would do better. they both work great on 10" fish so i suppose it matters the size limit required where u fish.

I have had my fish taco for a while now and it works great on the crappie and sand bass. Of course it is always better when you are catching fish that do not have to be measured to see if they are the minimum limit. It seems to work fine on all I have to measure for minimums. Here is a pic of the taco I have been using.

We had a 10" length limit on our lake for a while but now it doesn't matter. I really liked the Frabill Checker when we had to use it.
When we are catching fair numbers of fish I rarely keep anything under 10 or 11" anyway.

An 11.5 inch fish won't even think about it at grenada in either of those checkers( have not tried the taco).

I have one of the walmart special GOLDEN RULES, and it is ALWAYS right. You have to lay your fish on it, but it is acurate every time..

All items pertaining to fishing come at a cost. We have to decide if the cost justifies the use. I find if the item is going to be a long term item, I am going to get the best I can afford. We can look for bargains and sometimes we get only what we pay for. Cheap is not usually something that equates to quality. The taco is priced reasonably for the quality, ease of use, and practicality of the product. I personally like it and am going to purchase some of these for gifts to my fishing buddies.

Earnest, I helped an old lady cross the street yesterday. Got an extra 4 stroke motor laying around?

I fish and I make a decent buddy, I mean, not the bail you out of jail after 10 PM kind of buddy, but I'm good from 9 to 6 PM Monday through Friday.

IMO the Frabil is worthless for 12" fish. As said before it'd difficult to drop the fish in while holding it by the lips. The Taco looks pretty good, but I think I'll strap down a Golden rule and be done with it. Either that or only catch 14" fish from now on. Come to think of it, that is the cheapest way to go, so I think I'll just do that instead, so don't worry about the Taco Wardsmit.

I'll be happy to pick up the shipping Earnest. :)

Yep. I use one too, but have to end up leaving it in the livewell or
cooler when it gets hot. Leave it in the sun here in the Summer,
and fish go "sizzle" and stick to it, leave half their scales on the rule.

To help cradle them hyper ones while you check'em, get a $4.50 6" PVC coupling, and cut it in half (or better yet in 3 pcs.), carve the pipe stop rib out of the middle, and silicone onto the ruler with quality clear silicone. It'll be there for the long haul. I also cut my ruler down to 18".......don't think I'll need any more than that.
Sell the other two cradles to ya buddies:).

I went with an old fart the other day and he had a built in ruler on his arm. He could hold a crappie in his hand, with the lips at his finger tips and if the tail covered the wrinkle in his arm it went in the cooler. If it didnt, it hit the water.

We've got a 9" minimum here and I don't keep any under 10". There's enough difference in a 9" and a 10" fish that eyeballing works plenty well. I may be off by as much as a 1/4" sometimes, but by using my self-imposed minimum of 10", I won't be getting any tickets, because they aren't even close to being too small..
