I fish with 4lb gold & chartreuse hi-vis monos ... in all water clarities. My PowerPro is 10/2 and hi-vis yellow, and I don't use a leader. People fishing around, or with me, have used clear/blu mono ... and haven't done better. At least, not "better" enough for me to consider using a leader.

Ain't much way to tell if you're "missing lots of fish", by not using a leader ... 'cause, if'n you ain't catchin 'em, how do you know they're there :p ... and if you are catchin 'em, you obviously don't need a leader :D

But, next time you're on fish ... tell your partner to try a leader (or you do it) and see if it makes all that much difference. Maybe in real clear water, on heavily pressured fish, that were in a neutral mood ... it might make a difference. Otherwise, I'm of the mind that the fish are much more interested in your bait, than your line !!

i totally agree with crappiepappy i really don't think fish care what type line your using

i think maybe what the guy was trying to say would be feeling the fish bite maybe with heavier lines or different kinds mono/braid you wont feel the really light bite as well but if that was the case i would have to say that the rod has a lot to do with that
is that a bite...YEAH FISH DONT HAVE HANDS

Have you ever seen that contraption that many used back when that is made from a brazing or welding rod? It is hammered flat on the ends and a place to tie it on and a hook on the other end. It is to make it easier to get away from snags and they work. I don't use them, but they can still be found at some places.

I figure if they will hit that welding rod they will hit my hi vis yellow Power Pro or my Mr. Crappie 6# hi vis yellow.

I have started to experiment though with tying a leader on my Power Pro just to see, but no results yet.

Not only do the crappie not spook from the hi viz lines; they actually are curious enough that they will come up to it to look at it (I've seen this countless times in large aquariums). I use Stren 4/14 in gold, never with a leader, and I catch my share of crappie. This leader thing on braided lines started with the bass guys; as they are taught from birth that a bass won't eat your jig if he can see your line. Whatever blows their skirts up. Honestly, if you're going to all the trouble to put a leader on your braided line, you're wasting time not spent fishing.

I know I'm probably wasting time, but I use about 2' of fluorocarbon as a leader on my FireLine. Since I do fish for trout with the same rod, it's just a habit. Can't say it makes any difference on crappie, but it does with trout.

Well I usually tie a 5-8' 6lbs leader on mine. When trolling, I catch more fish than the old man I fish with...he doesn't tie a leader on. Also where I fish ( Toledo Bend) is full of stick ups, and hang ups are common. I would rather it break off on the mono than the braid.

Good point Dave... break-off's. superbraid is expensive compared to mono or a small piece of fluoro. I like to spool up just before ice-out and try to get a full season out of a spool full of braid. Having a breakoff at the leader only leaves a little line in the water, where with braid alone, best you can do is cut it off as far below the water as you can reach - leaving more line in the water.

Agreed. I use my light tackle for trout on occasion and the leader makes a HUGE difference. Can't say that I can prove it with crappie, 'cause I haven't tried without it.

Fishing with a slip bobber and braid using minnows I like to use a lighter mono leader so I don't loose the slip bobber set up if I have to break off. If I break off I only have the leader and hook to tie back on.

As for Skips post I've never seen any to buy but do make my own. When using them I try to find the thickest nasty brush I can find to drop the minnows into.

I don't fish for trout and the only clear water around here is what comes out of the faucets.
