    Default What type feather?

My dad has started tying jigs this past week and is doing a pretty good job for a beginner. I have been looking at Barlow's and different pics on the net of jigs and can't seem to find any feathers to purchase like this. Can someone tell me what kind of feather is used on these jigs? Where can I get these type feathers?

I really enjoy reading all the tips and info provided on these forums.

    Thanks for any help,

Well the one on the right looks like hackle. I started with feathers and switched to synthetic craft fur/hair. It is much cheaper than feathers and I like the motion of the hair better than feathers while the jig is still in the water.

Hobby Lobby has some good stuff to use and there is a place in California...Western something that sells a bunch of different colors of the craft hair. $2 to $3 of the stuff makes a couple hundred jigs at 1/16 oz.

F&F Those are guinea feathers, I think. You can find them almost anywhere feathers are sold.

I use synthetic hair, maribou and flashabou that I bought. I have collected and used squirrel tail hair grey and red. In feathers I have used pheasant and bobwhite quail. It all depends on the color and the action you want to achieve. That guinea feather looks good to me if i had some of those I know I would be tying some of those too.

I will use Marabou, Squirrel or Kip for my crappie jigs. Add some Krystal flash and chenille and you are set to catch good crappie.

I would imagine IMHO that all the "Exotic" feathers etc are used more when tying flies rather than crappie jigs. I do find some nice feathers at the local craft stores and flea markets.

Yes backtocrappie is right I think. I have seem fake mallard flank too and sometimes they use another duck and dye it, but that sure look like mallard flank to me.

I have 2 5 gallon buckets about 3/4 full of duck feathers I got from hunters. A little of everything from mallard to wood duck and many in between. I just wish I had time to do more with them as they are great looking feathers. I use them more on flies though as hackle.

mallard flank is super cheap..like a buck or 2 for a small bag of them. probably 50+ feathers in the smal bag at Sportsmans warehouse for like 1.10 or so.
i like that fly/jig pic...ill have to tie a few up for giggles now
