    Default Hook size....

What size hook do you think is best for Crappie fishing with minnows? I'm a little confused by differing numbers, shaft length, color and style?

#6 extra light wire long shank cricket hook. If I remember correctly I use the Eagle Claw 215EL-6. Note, Aberdeen means light wire and then there is extra light wire. Why, because it damages the minnow less and is easy to pull out of the cover when hung up.

Confused: In the hook world, the bigger the number the smaller the hook. Unless, you get on the other end of the scale - the "ot's" - the higher the number the bigger the hook. From the smallest to the biggest -- . . . 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, etc.

I like a #2 or even 1/0. I use the #2 aberdeens most of the time, but I'll step up to the 1/0 with bigger minnows. A lot of people think that hook is too big for crappie, but I've caught tiny ones on the 1/0 with no problem.

I like to use #2 Drop Shot Hooks made by Gamakatsu, because I always use a minnow and jig when I do minnow fish in the summer. I don't use minnows except in that time and I always have the minnow above the jig. I use the jig for bait and weight so I use 1/8 and 1/4 oz jig when fishing like that.

I grew up using #1 gold Eagle Claw Aberdeen hooks. Never missed many fish because it was too big. Also helped with the occasional largemouth or catfish. Now days I'm sold on "premium" hooks. I pretty much only use Gamakatsus and Owner for fresh and salt water. More expensive? Yeah. Worth it? Absolutely.
There's nothing wrong with the Eagle Claws, but most people don't take the time to sharpen them. A dull/factory fresh hook is the cause for poor hookups 90% of the time, IMHO.
