    Default Humminbird 997 repair.

Crappiehunter and I attempted an upgrade last week (Thurs) on his 997. It locked up. Sent it off to Humminbird Friday and he got it back today. It was out of warranty and was due several upgardes. There was no charge for the repair upgrade for the unit. Now that is pretty good service.

I havta to say some good bout 'em occasionally.

I'm curous, were you updating off of low battery power? Most all lockup I have read about occured with low voltage/current conditions?
I think there is a way to resolve it over the phone with the Humminbird people! Its worth a try if it happens again.

Voltage fine. We did a pc connect update per Hbird instructions. Got bout a 1/3 bar on update, then error popped up. Updated the 797 fine. Locked up on 997.

I'm guess en it was a current issue. were you using the pc-cable with batteries? The 997 draws more. and it will not work in that scenario!I really prefer the sd card for updates. you can do it right in the boat where you should have a solid electrical system!

Not a current issue. My supply puts out 5 amps. Runs my laptop fine. We were following as issued instructions.

Todd needs to get a SD card and load the updates . LOL I asked him last year if he had ever updated that unit. and he was going to get around 2it.

Guess I could offer to do it for him. but I can't even get him to call me back.

Shouldn't matter which way data is loaded. Serial communications programs have been around a long time. Lots longer than SD cards. It should work as written. No excuses for it not to work.

If serial data didn't work (and work good), then we would never connect to the Internet. We live in a serial packet switching world.

If Humminbird has a problem, then they need to fess up and fix it.

I am confident of my equipment and my abilities to do these simple tasks. Click. Point. Click.

I will use the serial link again. That is what it is for.

I've done it both ways but it was way easier with the card. Didn't have to do any thing but put the card in. This way I don't have to worry about virus protection, fire walls or other things that can pop up at bad times. This summer it got to where the only reason I used the PC cable any was to hook the laptop to the bird when I was mapping.
