I agree with that. You will get some other larger species more than you normally do, but if you think there are some slabs down there show em some meat. I use 3 inch grubs a lot and I want to experiment with larger size tubes as well. What is that plastic you have on there?

I have some 1/2 oz jigs poured that has a 1/0 hook also. but I also have some in the Walleye head.
They swing side to side on the way down. And crappie can't stand them doing that.
Same head as the stand up but that one is a 5/8 oz.

Got some 1/8 & 1/4 with #1 Sickles I planned on using for bass, but have been thinking about using some for crappie with a little longer marabou tail. Think it may be something they don't see much.

I was thinking that, but I haven't ever seen one that big that I can recall. I have seen them before, but can't recall the name.

One of the best days ever for me on Crappie was fishing with 1/2 oz jigs and 3" double tail grubs.
WE loaded the boat that day with slabs and everyone else was catching small fish.

Mr Patty , I fish less than 10' deep over 95 % of the time here. My favorite bait is a 2'' umbrella tube pushed over a 1/8 oz round head leadhead. Most folks are stunned cause I don't use small baits . I would like to find a tapered head leadhead in 3/16 oz to fit my tubes but all I find have large heavy Bass hooks.:(

I agree that big bait equals big Crappie. In my Bass fishing every spring slabs will hit 3/8 oz double willow leaf spinners with 2 #5 blades cast for Bass. My dear departed dad used some large Crappie baits too. I've seen him fish with 3'' stingray grubs and trolled Bass minnows instead of the dinky ones everyone normally used. It's common to find slabs with Shad almost 5'' in their stomach.

I hadn't thought of it until now, but when you troll with crank baits, bandits and such, you are normally using bigger baits and catching bigger fish. Finally the lights came on for me. By the way, nice fish.

"My favorite bait is a 2'' umbrella tube pushed over a 1/8 oz round head leadhead."

I too use a 1/8 oz jighead with a 2" bait most of the time, like the feeling you get with a heavier bait. Going to try some 3" baits next.

Mr Paty,
I am going to guess that you are vertical fishing these jigs and not casting?

Thanks

All sounds good, big things eat big but remember a Elephant will eat a peanut. Got a guide on Lanier that fishes for Stripers with Crappie minners and when ask about it that was his reply. He sees the fish schooling and toses in the middle of them on a bobber...Dennis

I agree with the elephant thing and I catch a lot of big Crappie on 1/16 oz jigs.
However when the Crappie are feeding on big shad they will often bite big jigs better.

If I'm fishing shallow I often use the big bait in a 1/8 oz head.

Yes, I fish the big heads vertically.
