Default Viet Nam (or other) Veterans

I noticed there seems to be a number of veterans on this board, so I thought I would start a thread that everyone could post about their service to our country. I am going to post a picture of me in Viet Nam. No, I wasn't a grunt, (I have the deepest respect for grunts), I was a Seabee. I did get a combat action ribbon though and was on a number of firebases around Da Nang. This picture was taken at a camp at a place called Phu Loc, a Seabee camp located on Highway 1 between Phu Bai and Da Nang. We helped build Highway 1. I spent 1969 there.

    Default Dennis Wayne Hammond 1946-1970

I think I'm going to choose to do something a little bit different here, Being that I received all the thanks that I required by being given the chance to live a full life, I am going to post about a Vietnam Veteran that did not. This man ate, slept, and breathed fishing. I can almost hear him chuckle finding his name mentioned in a fishing forum. Dennis was taken captive February 8, 1968, and died in captivity March 7, 1970. His remains was identified and returned in January 2004, I saw him laid to rest in Bremond Texas on May 22, 2004

If you choose you may read much more about Dennis here:

    A Shadow on the Wall

It was 2:00 a.m in the morning, when he came upon the wall...
a dark black "V" of granite, it stands not very tall.

The timing was premeditated, he had to be alone...
for it's very hard to hear, a voice that's etched in stone.

He paced those wings of black, looking for a friend...
and to reflect upon a moment in time, to a place where they'd once been.

Then the panel suddenly appeared, and the voice was once again heard...
a long lost friend had been found, among the whisper of his word.

In the silence of the night, it echoed from the wall...
"You can let it go now, and thanks for coming to call"

And then he moved away, the silhouetted wall began to fade...
but looking back he noticed......his shadow.... it had stayed .

Then came May 22, of 2004...
his shadow had moved to Bremond, to see the final door.

No longer only a voice, a voice only etched in stone...
his friend had come home now, no longer all alone.

Thirty-six years had passed, since he last stood beside his friend...
but now in Bremond Texas, a long journey would finally end.

Back once again with family, a family that waited so long...
beside his Mother and Father, that had taught him right from wrong.

Now my friend, my comrade in arms, my shadow can finally rest...
of all the friends I may ever have, you'll remain my very best.

I have met your distant friends, and what a brotherhood they are...
and now we are also like family, and will never stray very far.

And now to the final line, as many hearts begin to mend...
it is a privilege and an honor, to have you "Ham", to have
    you as my friend.

I'm not a veteran but did serve in Army from Jan 61 to Dec 63. I sure do admire those that have served and am thankful for my sheltered and peaceful life(to fish and hunt at home) I have been able to live because of those who have served. Again thanks to you all.
BTW Dutch, to my untrained eye, that doesn't look like US issue equipment in your hands :D .

To make it short: San Diego for boot camp, a year in Millington, TN for electronic training, TAD to NAS, Key West, FL, assignment to USS America CVA 66, then a 2 week "sere" school N. of Brunswick, Maine in January prior to boarding the America. We sailed to the West Pacific to the Gulf of Tonkin, and stayed on "Yankee Station" till our eyes crossed. I was flight crew on the E-2B Hawkeye, an airborne early warning aircraft, as Radar Operator. Our "relief port" was Subic Bay and Olongapo Phillipines. I didn't like coming home to be cursed and spit on by Americans, but we were warned and it was a long time ago. I'm so glad to see the support by the public of our soldiers in the middle east, they deserve it. May God bless the families of loved ones lost or killed defending freedom and their country in 'Nam and the middle east.

Yep, it was a battlefield pickup. To bad I could not bring it home, as it would have looked real good over the fireplace.

    OK, I can get in on this;
    USAF, 1966 - 1970
    Aircraft Radio Repairman
    2-yrs Southeast Asia,
    Duty station, Clark AFB, Phillipines.
    TDY- Danang, Bangkok, Udorn, Tianan.
Loved the travel, hated the service.
Sure wish I could go back and do it again with the knowledge I have now !
Darn right I'd change things, like staying in and making a career out of it, etc.

    USAF 1969-1974, stateside. Medic.
Orders for Nam redlined at the last moment.
Could never have made the service a career without being busted a few times, like happened to many of the lifers I had the pleasure of knowing. Memorable experience and my first use of an artificial lure.

I am in awe of the vets who survived D-day and speak with many at the V.A. hospital I work at. Too have spoken with Patton .... WOW!
