Have you checked your battery?? It could be the motor is dragging your battery down , try hooking some jumper cables see if you don't get better results!! Also try running some Seafoam thru your gas to improve motor performance ......
"Have a 79 evinrude lark outboard, just got the boat. It had been sitting up for about 6 months and was running fine when was put up. I put a battery in
and hit the key and starter would barely turn it(was dragging). Take
the plugs out and would turn it fine. Got a rebuilt starter put it on
first thing it tried to crank, went dead got it back going then the same.
After about 4 times did the same thing as the old starter . Talk to the
place i got the starter they said didn't sound like it had 12 volts going
to it. Went to wal-mart got some good battery terminals. Put them on
same as the first time about 3 times of cranking started dragging again.
About 2 hours later it start up turn it off a couple time same
thing(dragging). What would make this happen motor or starter.

Did cables strait to starter from car. Might be a bad starter, but two of um doing the same thing is odd. But thanks
First of all have your battery load tested, even if its brand new. Marine battery cables have crimped on lugs and they can corrode inside where you can't see it causing the problem you are having. Bypass them completely with a jumper cable one at a time to see if that is the problem. It cost me $130 to learn that lesson.

Most of my outboard problems are bad gas, use a additive---keep all connections clean and lightly greased.--I try and keep my batteries on a trickle charge most of the time, that keeps them active and will not die in the winter months. I always carry a extra battery on my boats, its a life saver at times.
sounds to me it's in the motor,,,
Thanks guys going to take it a guy thats real good with older outboards.
Take your battery to Auto Zone and have them test it. It could be a dead cell and if so, it's time for a new battery. Also, it sounds like you have some dead gas in the tank.
