Shoot, each of us has different ideas of what'll make us happy -
my first boat "of my own" was a 15 1/2' Starcraft fish-n-ski with a
90 Nissan... it was an '89, and in good shape. When I tried to sell it
first in '92 or 3, I asked around 6K for it I think, and folks laughed at me.
Finally did sell it in '97 for about half that. But I am cursed with buying high
and selling low, would not make it as a horse-trader

Only think I really didn't like about the boat, was no place to put rods,
dual console w/ no kind of rod locker, and little or no floorspace. If you
carried a 48 quart cooler with you, and sat it in the floor, you had to step
over it to get to the front deck. But, it was purty, and I caught a bunch
    of fish in it!

I say get what you can afford and go fishing. If you wait to get everything you want in your first boat, you'll never own one.

My first "fishing boat" was a 16ft. jon w/9.9 johnson. Couldn't even get out on the river but fished the creeks and area lakes in it. Caught fish, had a blast. The boat I have now is like a yacht compared to the old one but I wish I still had it.

Yeah man, if it makes you grin, go for it! Sure you'll have a lot of fun
in it. My daughter was bummed out when I got rid of mine, it was red and
sparkly - got a olive drab johnboat in its place and it wasn't nearly as cool :D

Everybody’s got to start from somewhere. Before I bought my boat, all I did was bank fishing and I thought that was great. Once I got my little starter…boy, I will never go back to shore fishing unless I really have to. I dream about getting a nice rig someday, but that’s the key word…”someday.” So, I’m not worried one bit about not having a nice rig right now, because as long as my heart still beats…that rig will come one day. Until then, I’m going to enjoy every bit of what I can and keep’em coming in.

    I'd rather be fishing!

my family use to own a cajun and come to think about it, it was around that year as well. nice boat ours was a 17' fish and ski, my family was mom and dad 3 kids and sometimes friends came along as well. Good starter boat if you ask me. One thing tho on our fish and ski the transom was starting to crack. take a look at that transom beffore you do anything.

We all start small and comprimise. If your gut tells you yes, there's nothing more to say. I used to fish out of a runabout and constantly hit the windshield. Took it off and put it in the garage and loved the boat from that day on. You might consider that to give the feel of more room.
