I have at late 80's model Gamefisher outboard, 9.9 hp. Have a whole lot of trouble getting started, but once it has ran for a while it will start up on the first crank. Also while running wide open it will want to bog down and not run very smooth. Sounds like it could be something simple, but cant figure it out. Gas is good and clean, carb has been cleaned up, new plugs. Any one have any sugestions. By the way great site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has it sat for an extended period without being ran?

Bought the motor last summer and did a over all tune up before testing it out. Never would run quite right. Hit a stump at Reelfoot in the fall and broke the mounting bolt. Finally found one on e bay and just put it back together. It has sat for a couple months, but had it out every weekend before that If I take the plugs out and wet them down with fluid it will fire right up, but still lose power wide open

The next time you are out and running wide open and it starts to loose power, try pumping the primer bulb. If it acts like it wants to run better, rebuild your fuel pump. If it makes no difference then rebuild your carb. Also if you are using starter fluid, STOP. There is no lubricant in it. Use some of your regular mixed fuel in a spray bottle.

I had a sears 15hp twin years ago. I tried to get it squared away, no luck. Took it to the local marine mechanic, sharp mechanic, 3 tries, still no luck. Sold it for what I could get and went with an evinrude and never looked back. IMHO most of those are oversized anchors.

Thanks for all your replys, did not have a ton of money when I bought it and was tired of fishing trolling motor only lakes. If I would have done a little more research and found out how imposssible it is to find parts I would have waited. I'll have to do a little more tinkering around before I turn it into a lawn ornament. Thanks again guys!!!
same here years agolate'70's I had a small runabout with an Elgin 45 twin. It had dual everything points carbs coil, it was basically 2 motors sandwiched together. It ran on 1 cylinder just as smooth as it did on 2 only with less power.Originally Posted by skeetbum
