    I built boats for a little while, and learned how much trouble rotted wood can be. A boat that old has a wood laminated transom. Rot usually begins near the motor mount holes or the drain plug hole. To check for rot I have always done this;
    1- Place your foot on the decav plate on the motor and begin to add weight, while watching the transom near the motor.
    2- Take a piece of cloth, not too thick, and the smallest ball peen hammer you can find or borrow. Lay the cloth over the transom, or area in question, and begin to lightly tap all over. The cloth protects from tap marks. Solid laminate makes a good hard sound, and you will know the dull "thunk" of rot the first time you hear it.
    Open transom boats are not real hard to put a transom in, but a double hull is a real chore and expensive if you hire it out. Good luck with the boat, sounds like a good deal if it's the right boat for you.
