Just what is chartreuse???

Is there a true chartreuse? Sometimes the color is extremely yellow, sometimes very green, sometimes a mix of the two. What's the deal?

I've always thought of it as a light, flourescent yellow, like #10 shown here:

I have been fighting that even before I started tying. However the truth is that the yellow (FL. Yellow) is Chartreuse and the Green shade one if FL. Chartreuse. If something has a lot of green it's usually called FL. Green or Limetreuse.

I still have to ask every time someone orders Chartreuse if they want the green one or yellow one, LOL!

Not all, but most Mfg. have Chartreuse as the Yellow one and it is sometimes called FL Yellow and most call the Green one FL. Chart. You can see it many places like that.

I know the Fl Chart looks yellow here, but it's is a green tint when you get it in your hand. Ask them they will tell you Chartreuse Yellow is FL. Yellow.

Notice 51 is FL Chart and it's green tint. If you ask them the FL Yellow is their Chartreuse. You can look at their strung neck hackle and the FL. Chart is green. I have a lot of it.

In each case the green chartreuse is called FL. Chartreuse and I have bought materials from more places than I can to mention and everyone is like that!

Each person can all it what ever they want, but it only confuses everyone if they don't call it by the right name. If someone calls me and ask for FL. Chart or says the green Chart then there is no confusion. Before I started tying I ordered some hand tied jig and ask for Chartreuse and got the green one and that is not what I wanted.

So I always ask if they want the green one or the yellow one.

This is definitely not something I came up with and that you can take to the bank!

To not complicate orders, I say green chartreuse and yellow chartreuse, or fl. yellow and fl. green.

However I used to say chartreuse and mean a bright, fl. yellow.
