Don't know what Moby Dick is but I came up with this last night.
Used equal parts of Andy's (real fine corn meal w/ seasonings) and flour,
seasoned that with a BBQ rub I make, Lowry's Seasoning Salt would do.
Then dipped fish in buttermilk rolled in flour mixture deep fried till done.
I have ate a lot of crappies and my wife and myself now swear by these.
    ABSOULUTLY DELICIOUS!!!

I like the sound of the buttermilk. i have tried various mixes of the cornmeal and flour. We like 1/3 cornmeal and 2/3rds flour.

around these parts ... is Long John Silver's or Capt D's :p

You are talking about this place, right : http://www.mobydickrestaurant.com/

Can't help you on the batter .... (Family Secret, according to website) :D

Read several reviews on MD's food/service/prices ... about 50/50 (great or terrible).

Don't use (or like) batter on my fish, anyway ... just a light dusting of yellow corn meal, and into the frying pan, for me.

    Luck2ya ... on your search !!

Bass Pro's Uncle Bucks Hot and Spicey fish batter is yum yum. Of course this is just my thought.

Play with this to suit your taste.

    1 beer
    2 cups self-rising flour
    3 eggs

    note:
i add white pepper(kids don't see black specks) and garlic powder
no self-rising flour add 2 tsp baking powder to regular flour
    more beer=thinner batter
