    Default Long Line Trolling

I tried it for the first time a little last year. This year my plan is to try and perfect the technique. I haven't seen anyone in my part of Texas using this technique because most lakes are full of timber. Mostly people in my area spider rig deep in the winter and fish the trees most of the other times.

My question is when long line trolling do you troll into the wind or with the wind?

I plan to be using 6 pound test line. Is that the best line size?

should I cast as far as I can or make short casts?

What is the ideal troll speed?

Can long line trolling be used in the winter? If so what sort of areas should I be looking for to troll in the winter?

Thanks in advanced for your inputs

I, by no means, am not an expert...

But when I was a kid - we went fishing every spring for crappie with my grandparents - and we trolled (that's all we did)...

We would simply cast out, let some pulls of line out, and start trolling. We would vary our trolling speed and distance from the lake as we tried to find the crappie...and we would always pay attention to how many pulls we were, long/short cast, and where, in relation to the shore, we were when the bites occurred...

We could get on them pretty quickly - and once we found good areas, we'd troll back and forth over them until the bite slowed, and would move on.

Wind didn't really matter, line was either 6 or 8 lb, and we usually used 1/8 or 1/16 oz. roadrunners.

hope this helps - i'm sure you'll get lots more info than what i can provide!

You can watch Derrick trolling with Russ on one of the Midwest crappie tapes. Good info and excellent learning show.
