The Willie Bee picked up a 3rd place Grand Slam Super Derby finish over the weekend in the Manitowoc Salmon Derby. We boated 6 kings and 3 rainbows and entered 5 kings and 3 rainbows in the slam event. The super derby was set up to enter only 5 kings 4 rainbows 2 coho 2 lakers and 2 browns. The fish were in close for us, the best spots over the weekend were 20-25 feet off the piers in Manitowoc for kings, 30-40 feet off the nuke plant for a mixed catch and off the lighthouse in 40-50 feet. The J-plugs and flasher fly's worked for the kings and the orange spoons worked for the rainbows for us. With a mixed bag of 4 species being caught on the Willie Bee all week before the derby, the Sat. morning bite was shut down with a storm coming in. Our Thursday morning charter had a 10 1/2 lb coho that was caught hours before the derby and would have taken first place.
