I noticed you are from Hernando. Almost took a band directing job at the high school several years ago. Anyway, you fish much in Tunica Cutoff? I have heard some great things about that lake. I go over to Tunica casino's from time to time. Wondered if it would be worth while to drag my boat 3 hours to do some fishing in that lake?

You'll need to check the River gauge before you drag your boat 3 hours. Nothing worst than finding out you'll be fishing in a Fish Bowl cause all the water is gone. Although you can catch some good fish you wont be pulling in those 2 pound slabs very often at all. Most of the crappie are small to medium size Very few of what people call slabs.

    Just My opinion

Exactly right. I prefer the MS river to be at 12 to 18 feet on the Memphis gauge to have a good shot at trolling, jigging, whatever you like to do. It's different at Tunica, smaller fish but plenty of them and so much cover to choose a pattern from it can really overwhelm you. The spawn is sometimes later than surrounding lakes, sometimes earlier, but always sporadic. Most people fish the willows or other visible cover, but it is my favorite lake to troll in the area.

I won't give all the spots and tricks away unless you come up here and take me fishing, but I will say that you can limit out without turning on the big motor!

A local tip at Tunica is to tip your jig not with minnow but with a cricket if you are fishing tight to cover. Just seem to get more bites that way, and there are a lot of hand sized bluegill in the lake that make the trip interesting when the crappie won't bite.

The lake is at a good level right now (I think it was 15 or 16 feet today) and dropping. You should still be good on Monday. I am going to Tunica for a little while Saturday morning so I will have a report for you.

HOWEVER, I must say this is still a little too early for that lake in my opinion so I am not expecting much, I am just trying to get out of the wind and crowd at Sardis. I will have a few hours to try the outside edges of the willows and drift a little over the mats. If they bite great, if not at least I get to dust the cobwebs off of my boat.

Wow. Water at Tunica is 10 degrees colder than anywhere else around here. No action down there. I felt like the only person on the lake and my empty livewell can tell you why.
