Question What Kind Of Tackle Do You Use For Deep Crappie

What type of tackle do you use for deep crappie and how do you rig?

When they are real deep, I like to tightline them with a 4 jig setup. Gets costly when you get into some structure. That is when I use 1 jig with a 1/4oz buckshot about a foot or so above the jig. I know I probably don't feel some of the bites like that, but it sure helps when you get hung. Just let the slack down and most of the times you can get your jig unhooked. I do the same thing when using shiners/minnows to fish structure that is real deep.
You can't fish with a hung line!

I like a 2 jig set up on a Kentucky rig. I agree that you don't feel as many light nibbles but when you get hung in structure, you can get loose about 99% of the time.

    Thumbs up

You can heat the bend of your jig hooks with a "Bic" style lighter just till you see the hook change color. This takes some temper out of the bend and you can pull your jig loose from a hang up most of the time. Just take you neddle nose pliers and reshape your hook bend and go back to fishing. I preheat several jig head hooks before I put tubes or curly tails on. A dab of Super glue on the tube to head contact point will keep your tubes on much longer. Good Luck

Single 1/16th ounce jig tightlined or a minnow under a slip float.

Depending on the depth I will use a slip float rig for depths 2 to 15 feet. I will use a double Kentucky rig if the water is moving, river fishing, or deeper depths. 1/32nd jig or #6 hook.

    8# Mccoy line
    One in-line swivel
1/2 oz. egg sinker 12" below the swivel
#2 Eagle Claw 214EL hook 18" below the sinker.

I agree with Shipahoy in that I like a Slipbobber rigged with a small minnow for depths 2-20 feet over structure or 1/16 oz curlytail jig for 15-25 feet trolling or 1/16-1/8 oz spoon for swimming/trolling for crappie in >15 feet of water. Just have to let the crappie dictate what size or presentation they're hittin on! Hope this helps!!

I use a 1/16 oz jig (single) used on a 10-12' rod and power pro braid. If I get hung up, gently apply pull pressure until the hook straightens out and the hook releases. I get about 10 bend-backs before the hook breaks and I have to change jigs.
