I do this everytime i clean them. I've never done this in a boat while fishing but i do keep track of what they are eating and when. It gives me a heads up for next time.
I was reading about how some people actually gut check the stomach of the first crappie they'll catch. They get a better idea of what color and size bait to use. Anybody actually do this and how's it working for you?

Trout fishermen do this routinely. They even sell a minuature "turkey baster" type device to suck the stomach contents out with. I honestly don't think crappie necessitate this degree of knowledge to catch though.
