Default Fat Crappie In Lake Greeson

The crappie in Lake Greeson seem to be getting really fat early this year. I guess the mild water temperatures and an abundance of shad in the lake may be a couple of reasons. The females are really filling up with eggs too.

Yesterday while we were scouting a few spots we caught three that were between 15 and 16 inches. One was an ounce under two pounds and the other two were 1-ounce and 2-ounces over two pounds. We don't usually see them that heavy until up in January.

Here's the two that were over two pounds:

It's been a long time since I've seen a 3-pounder come out of Greeson but I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two in the next few months.

We were vertically jigging down in some of our deep Bamboo Crappie Condos with 1/16th-ounce Slater's Hair Jigs. The three big ones hit chartreuse/silver/chartreuse but orange/silver/chartreuse has been working too. They were all 21 to 24-feet deep. We cleaned 9 fish yesterday and the fillets stuffed two quart size freezer bags.

We messed around for a while this morning before sinking more bamboo and found them as shallow as 8-feet deep in 10-feet of water and as deep as 28-feet deep in 32-feet of water so they're still pretty scattered. The biggest one today was only about 14-inches.

    Jerry,

Awesome fish!! My brother and I will be there in 16 days, ready to go! I have the reels off getting cleaned and lubed, and am organizing everything. I can't wait! We will do our best to find that 3 pounder that you are talking about. <G>
