The transducer is mounted improperly. Maybe unlevel or to low or to close to motor.

How sould I determine it if is level?? Looks like it flat with bottom of the boat. How far away from engine should it be?

I've got the GPS version 580 and have had no issues. Your transducer should be sticking down about 1/4" below the level of the boat and have a slight angle twards the front of the boat (the back of the transducer should be lower than the front/transom part). Farther away from the prop the better. If you boat is a flat bottom or ModVee with a bunch of ribs/strikes on the bottom then you will have issues with it reading fish accurately at any speed over ~7-10mph like I do. Mine Still keeps bottom lock at 38mph WOT for depth readings though.

Are you shooting the humminbird rooster tail? If not go lower.

Moved transducer from left side of engine to right side about 20 inches from center of the boat. I was wondering if it might be too low below the bottom of the boat but guess not. Mine is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the bottom, and I do have it pointing alittle foward now...just need to get to the lake and try it since the move. I have a 20 foot Dura-Craft aluminium boat that has a modified "V" hull in the front and flat towards the back.

    Thumbs down Step Hull

I have a Lowe 180W & it has a step hull. My 585c has trouble reading at high speed due to turbulant water from the hull. I know of nothing that can be done about it. You may have same problem.
