    Default computer question

My problem is: I can't download complete videos such as from youtube or ones that members post on here. This just started a couple of months ago. never had a problem before. Occasionally it will get the whole thing , if it is a short one, but usually it just stops anywhere from 10 to 30 or 40 seconds into the video. The picture stays on the screen, it just freezes & won't go any farther.

Things I have tried: Cable modem went bad, I have internet service through our local phone company so they came out & replaced the modem.

My daughter got a laptop & I got her old computer, which was a lot newer than mine. It does the same thing.

Daughters laptop works through a wireless router, it does the same thing when she is here but nowhere else.

Called internet support at the phone co. Very little help there, the person I talked to said 90% of the time a firewall was causing this problem. Mine must fall in the other 10%. Turned the firewall off, still did it. I tried to tell him it had the same problem on 2 other computers but he was hung up on this firewall thing so I just thanked him & hung up. Figured I would go to the real experts, my friends on crappie.com

Sorry this was so long but tried to explain everything. Any suggestions?

If your daughter's wireless connects to a router connected to your ISP then it has to be their problem since it doesn't do that anywhere else.

That"s what I thought, but I couldn't convince "Tyrone". Maybe I'll call back & talk to someone else.

    Default A few thoughts

Wireless routers are inherently slow. They don’t work “as advertised” except in pristine conditions. The router processor has lots of overhead to manage. Noise, low signals, disconnects, reconnects , protocols, etc. All this before you get a bite to your pc.

    1. Run an internet speed test and record the upload/download rates.
    2. Disconnect wireless router got strait to modem and run the speed test.
    3. Compare test results.

Too much overhead eating up system resources?

    1. Check Windows task manager (cnrl+alt+del) and look at open (running) applications
    2. If you got a bunch of them running, then end them.

    Registry troubles and spyware

I would download CCleaner and run it.
I would also download spybot and run it.

Also: Reset wireless router and reset modem.

A few simple things to try (not necessarily in this order).

You may not be allocated enough bandwidth to do this. Has your ISP made any changes to their service lately? Google a program called Dr TCP and install it. You can tweak your download settings with it. Also, go to speedtest.com and check your speeds. You may just be getting choked by your ISP.
