Reel ? from Newbie!

New to crappie fishing.

Any suggestions to rod and reel make/ size/ model etc;

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Depends on what you're going to do. For casting jigs, I like a light or UL spinning rod and a reel designed for 4-6lb line. It's hard to go wrong with Shimano or Daiwa for the reel. For the rod, there are a ton of choices: Bass Pro, Cabelas, St. Croix, Loomis, Shimano, Falcon.

If you're going to troll, you'll need a different set-up.

Long rods with light to medium action ,light weight reels with 4 to 6 pound line. I use Shakespear spinning reels with Shakespear Durango 6'6" rods. I also spider rig with multi-piece poles 14', 12' and 10'. the 14's have west point crappie reels on them. all with 4 or 6 pound line. There are alot of combos out there just find what works best for you. When I launch with 2 of us in the boat there is 2 tackles boxes 1 ice chest and 20 assorted poles and rods. We can fish 8 poles each in Ga. and have a couple of spares for quick replacement incase of major break-off or tangle when the fish are biting.:D

In that case, I'd go with a longer rod: 12-14' from shore, 7-9' in a boat.

Like I said before, Shimano and Daiwa make primo gear. Just pick one in your price range. I really like the Shimano Symetre, the Daiwa SS Tournament model, and the new Daiwa Tierra.

Almost forgot -- the Pflueger Medalist is suh-weet and light as a feather -- $99.

For another opinion I'd say go with a light/ultralight action 5'6" rod. I'm partial to the Quantum Snapshot spinning reels myself. Great drags on these reels and they dont break the bank (@$20). Complete set up @ $40.

A 6 to 7' light or medium action graphite pole and a simple Zebco 33 work real good...affordable too. If the minners don't work out try some jigs under bobber also.

Take a look at the Mitchell 308 or the 310. both are nice reels and pretty good quality
