I have the 987 but if I were looking to buy now. It would be the 997. The screen is better in bright sunlight, The image is so much better. And it has better upgrades then mine.
Now If its a great deal on the 987c it does a great job. And I am talking open your eyes.

I just bought a 997 yesterday and put it on my boat.. Can't wait to fine tune it and learn to use it.

    Mr. Paty
I hope you got the Side Imaging unit.Once a person learns how to use it there isnt a safe brushpile in the water.

How does it give a better picture, the pixels are the same it seems, can you upgrade the 987 to be about as good as the 997c. What is the difference in the transducers?

You will love the unit. But its not a plug and play unit. Learn how to use it and read the manual. Its the best after you get it set up and working.
Bet thing is leave the poles home and spend a few hours with the unit on water you think you know well.
If i can help out let me know. I am still leaning my Old 987c-SI but love it. Also look and see if I mailed you on the DVD can not remember if I did or not.

The screen does not black out in bright sunlight on the 997 and theres some upgrades for the 987 but not anything to make it like the 997.
    The 987 is I think is 255 and 455. And the 997 is 455 and 800 KHz
So the side Imaging goes from 455 or what ever it is on the 987 to a big 800 on the new unit. So that is where the better picture comes from.
