Several years ago at work a fellow ask me to make him some picture frames for him using old weathered barn boards that he supplied. I made several frames for him leaving the old uncut board edges on the outside edge of his picture frames. When originally put together the frame miters were tight and looked very good - even if I say so myself. Several months later while in his office I noticed the inside edges of the miters had opened up on his picture frames. I felt bad how they eventually turned out.
When I was making the frames I ask him if he wanted a fresh cut edge on the outside of the frame or to leave the original board edge around the out side around the frame. He chose the later which is what I would have chosen if I was making the frames for myself. Anyhow that decision was wrong.
From the left over boards I made a frame for me where I had to use fresh cut edges on both edges of the frame boards. This was the correct way to make the frames since the mitered corners on my frame did not open up after it was made. This is how it looks today.
