Jigs

New here and to crappe fishing.

I am sure there are post on this site but for a novice, and I mean a real novice, how do I use/present a jig and when would you use one.

Just got a Humminbird 777c and still totally confused about this.

Any direction would help!

Have never caught a crappie before.

Live in Bossier City La and know I have great lakes here according to you members!

I like to cast a small 1.5" YUM curl tail grub at crappie. I'd look for visible structure like laydown trees, standing timber, beaver piles, old fence rows boat docks, marinas (if not posted!), dams, bridges, ETC.
I'd also use my electronics to look for fish around brush under the surface. It may take a while to find brush on your electronics, just look for somthing that comes up off the bottom and see if there is fish hanging around it! It can be rather tedius looking for brush in deeper water but don't give up! Crappie like acsess to deep water so drop offs, points and creek ledges should get your attention first.
I use a 1/16 oz jighead with my curl tails. I'm not sure on color in your neck of the woods but any shade with chartreuse should do it. My favorite is black/chartreuse.

I have a little info that may help on my How To Page.

If tight lining just don't jerk work it, just slow and maybe just move your rod to one side and let the jig swim (swing) back under it and then move the other way. Sometime they like it better not moving at all.

If casting count it down the the depth you want it to run and reel slow and steady. I am sure you will get lots more info here from all these guys here.
