Default Think I caught a terrible disease.

I was at Walmart yesterday and broke down and bought a cheap fly rod and reel combo. I really wanted a better one, but it was all they had and at $20 what the heck.

So I took it down to my neighbor's floating dock and fished a little trying to catch a bream or something. A few cast and nothing, but then all of a sudden all heck broke lose and that little tiny fly had got a big bass to jump on it and the fight was on. First thing that happened once he took off like crazy was I thought, now what? After a few minutes of fighting him he pulled off without me ever putting and eye on him at all. Guess i should have sharpened that hook or it was just too little.

Soon after than another one hit that was smaller, but he pulled off fast and I came back with a new sickness, fly fishing and not I must get a better rig to do this as I am just like that bass, hooked!

Anyway I thought you would enjoy this little story,

Yes it IS a terrible disease, try it from a kayak I get towed around a lot, even by bream.
There is no cure only treatment!!!
What makes a better lightning rod than a graphite fishing rod? NOTHING!

Yeah, it's fun. There are definitely better outfits available, though. Fortunately, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get good fly gear these days. Get some good casting instruction, too. I see a lot of guys waving $600 rods who are $50 casters. Good, basic casting is not hard to learn and makes it even more fun.

Uh oh, pretty soon that clamp of yours will be screwed down on tiny hooks and you'll have to use a magnifying glass to see what your doing. There is a lot to learn to be a fly fisherman and not look like your whipping horses. It can be fun and frustrating as well. I have built a flyrod and tied flies, but it never really got into my blood. I have a friend who is an avid fly fisherman and he inroduced me to flyfishing when i ws a kid.

You might want to graduate to a rig like this till you think you might want to spring for something more serious. One thing you'll find is that flyfishing is expensive, once you get serious.

    or this - http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...038&hasJS=true

Fly rigs well over 1k are not at all uncommon, but real quality can be had in the 200 - 500 range for an entire setup. Then there is fly tying - hehe. Knowing you I bet you get stuck in that really quick. Then there are waders - booted or non booted, neoprene, rubber, nylon, insulated non insulated, then boots, then clothes, vests, baskets, fly line, tippets, and fly boxes. Then there are float tubes or pontoons.

Try poppers for some real topwater fun.

Man looking at those poppers sure brings back some memories of some fun fishing.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...sp?id=cat20431 - Cabelas has a real nice fly fishing section

Simply put, flyfishing can be a life long obsession if you find you have the bug. Have fun!! Oh man I have to quit looking at all that stuff or I'll have to spend some money.

It was nice knowing you, skipto. I've lost alot of good buddies over the years to flyfishing. It seems like they only wanted to catch little trout (kittie food) after they got hooked. Some guys up here do real well with crappie on fly rods in timbered reservoirs, but I don't see many. Let me know how you evolve and if you keep focused on crappie fishing.

For $10 more, I'd rather have the Redington Crosswater:

Or the Temple Forks NXT outfit:

I very rarely FF for trout, but I do have a redfish trip coming up soon. Looking forward to sight casting to big fish in shallow water!
