Default Spray painting vs. powder coating jigheads

Ive seen a couple of threads on powder coating jigheads and thought I would share my way of doing it. What I do is lay out some masking tape sticky side up and lay my jigs on top of the tape with the lead head sticking out past the tape. I layout about 40 or so. When I get 'em all laid out I put a second piece of masking tape on top of the jigs, just the hook. I primer or use pearl color then spray paint 'em any color I want. If I want 5 one color or 100 I can just tear off what I need. Granted, powder is tougher so if your bouncing them off the wall below the bridge you might lose some paint but for vertical fishing no problem.

Anyway, just a quicker method I have found to get the heads painted. I use about 6 basic colors for the heads and then concentrate more colors on the body and tail. I also clearcoat the heads. I'll attach a pic. Hope this helps.

Now maybe I am just thick, but I don't think you painted them eyes with a spray paint?

I actually prefer not having all the stuff you breath spraying paint and don't think I want to put on a mask either. Plus like you said it tougher when using the powder paint.

I will stick with the powder paint, but if it works for you then I say that is what you should do.

    Thanks for sharing,

I am with Skip on this one too. I'll either buy painted jigheads or powder paint them and use two different size nailheads to do the eyes with contrasting paint. I do not know....to each their own opinion. I do know that powder paint gives you a really tough finish with no runs, drips or errors.

    Thanks for your input though.

Skip, no....LOL. That is the finished product. Prime the heads, put the color on, then the eyes then put on clear. And as far as fumes, I do it outside.

Quick question for you guys......where do you get your powder colors at??

    Thanks in advance.

I think eyes on jigheads are better at catching fisherman...I quit painting eyes trying to save some time and aggravation and caught just as many or more fish last year than I usually do...definitely caught more big fish so I don't think eyes are a big deal.....just my thoughts????

If I am buying small jars I get them from Barlow's and if I want a pound I buy from the mfg of Pro-Tec.

I do get some other colors from another Mfg., but most of mine comes from Pro-Tec. The other stuff is not as easy to deal with.
