I have the etrex legend (blue one), and it gets closer the faster I am going. Have seen it get down to 2 ft while traveling down the road. It gets really bad when you stop though.
I have an older Etrex, its the yellow one for about $99. Most of the time after it has locked in on the Sats. it says 18' accuracy. i have seen it lock in on 14' a few times. So what is the standard these days? I think its an eleven channel, and i hear the newer ones have 13. It makes for a lot of looking sometimes trying to find something you know is there. I'm wanting to get a new one , so what is the best bang for the buck. i would like it to have an electronic compass, and be able to hook up to my pc. this unit needs to be under $300 and hand held. thanks jm

Cane Pole has proved to me that the gps is not accurate below 1.5 mph. There are several good units out there right now. Look for 16 channel with WAAS. Also when you mark something give your unit time to settle down before you hit "Mark".

A question about the number of channels - My old unit only has nine
I think, but back in the day when I used to look at things like that, it
seems like most of the time it was only locked onto 5 or 6 at the most
anyway. If I understand it right, there are only so many satellites visible
at one time anyway??? I haven't kept up with the tech, maybe more are
in orbit now? I just wonder if some of the new ones advertising 16 channels
and such aren't just hype though.

I have an Etrex legend and it has 16 channels,BUT the instructions state that it will lock in on available satellites. They have to "see" them to lock on therefore they can't read all of them at once, but with more channels you can get info from more satellites if they are available.
Does that make sense??

I have the same one and the same problem, I don't care for it because the compass stop when you are not moving, and it does make it hard to find sets in the water and everything else. If you come across anything let me no.
can't catch'em at home
