Thanks Chief and I will pass this great info on to my Navy buddies.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today praised the
passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to
allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag. Current
law
(US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and servicemen not in
uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying whether
they can or should salute the flag.
"The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one's
military service," Senator Inhofe said. "Veterans and service members
continue representing the military services even when not in uniform.
Unfortunately, current U.S. law leaves confusion as to whether veterans and
service members out of uniform can or should salute the flag. My
legislation
will clarify this regulation, allowing veterans and servicemen alike to
salute the flag, whether they are in uniform or not. I look forward to
seeing those who have served saluting proudly at baseball games, parades,
and formal events. I believe this is an appropriate way to honor and
recognize the 25 million veterans in the United States who have served in
the military and remain as role models to others citizens. Those who are
currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right,
and
their recognition will be an inspiration to others."
This Bill was passed July 25, 2007.
Let your veteran friends and service members know about the Passage of this
Bill.

Go Navy
What if we are wearing ball caps? Do we remove the caps to salute or just salute with them in place? I usually always have my ball cap stuck on my head.

Bill, I would think that you would leave your cover on if you are going to salute.
I rember a funny thing that happened while in the service. A kid on guard duty atm the regimental head quarters would stop and salute the flag each time he pasted the flag pole. A sargent was sent out, and told him to quit! Once was enough. As far as saluting the flag. if I felt a salute was in order, I would, any time any place, regardless, but I'm not going to to be compelled to do it.But my hand will go to my heart, and I will stand to, if the anthem is playing. Watching some of these patriots, holding their beer in one hand, and paying homage while talking is sort of strange, but guess what? Its what this country is about.
You know it is terrible that even though us Vets joined or were drafted into the Military and served this Great Country, that we have to have a bill passed to be able to be approved to salute our Flag. I hate to say it fellas but we are more and more like a communist nation. Its VERY HORRIBLE that it is legal for the flag burners to burn the Flag in protest (which I would go to jail over by the way because I would whoop some butt), but us VETS who fought for their right to do that have to wait for a bill to be passed to be justified. Sorry folks im just venting and probably sounds like im rambling also lol.
Soldiers and Firefighters. Some people were meant to call 911, Some were meant to BE 911
It also gripes me to see our flag worn as shirts, and baseball caps. Another thing that burns my butt, is those small flag lapel pins, i think you would need to have a dd214, honerable discharge to even wear one of them, not some loud mouthed draftdodging politician or talkshow host. But thats only my liberal side talking!
I was taught the correct way to salute the flag in the USMC. I served my God, Country, and Corps by serving in a anti terrorist group. I have never covered my heart when the colors passed, I did it the way i was taught, upper arm 90 deg to the body, arm bent at elbow, hand flat but tilted slightly forward, and touching the bill of my cover. Covered or not i still salute the colors the proper way and won't let any one tell me other ways. If you didnt serve and want to show your respect, then by all means cover your heart. As for me i'll always do it the other way.
Just my rant sorry to go on like this

I think they were just correcting a law that should not have been passed in the first place.
