    Angler Billy Hall Seriously Injured

MCC member, Billy Hall, Fannin, MS, was seriously injured in a boating accident this summer. Billy is a popular angler on both the local and in the national crappie tournament circuits, having fished and won tournaments with the Magnolia Crappie Club, Crappie Masters, and Crappie USA.

A life-long resident of Rankin County, MS, Billy had this terrible accident on his home lake, Ross Barnett Reservoir. This accident involved only Billy's boat, and it happened on a clear, calm Saturday morning around 8:00 AM. Luckily, Billy had a first-time partner in the boat with him who was a volunteer fireman and knew how to keep Billy alive until he could get help and get Billy to the bank and the waiting ambulance.

Billy sustained extensive head injuries. He was lucky to make it to the bank alive. He certainly would not have without the clear thinking of his fishing partner that day and the immediate reaction of another MCC member,Monty Blount, who was in a boat close by and heard the collision. Quick thinking by both fishermen saved Billy's life.

What happened? Billy hit a marker pole head-on. He centered it, shearing off the trolling motor on the bow of his Ranger. The initial impact caused the boat to flip around to Billy's side of the boat and the second impact was right at the sidewall next to the throttle stick. Bam! Immediate head impact with the pole. This freak accident didn't put a mark on his boating partner. The full impact and damage was to Billy's face and head. The result was 12 hours of surgery, a coma for several days, some reconstructive surgeries, and a life-altering brain injury. Additionally, Billy has lost his right eye, and the vision in his left eye is extremely limited.

Again, what happened? Billy failed to put the side-by-side front seats down before moving under power to his next fishing area. This caused a "blind spot" and the head-on collision with the marker pole. He was under power and planed off at the time of the collision.

How can I help? When tragedy strikes folks we know or people who share our own interests, there is always an immediate outpouring and desire and willingness to try to be of assistance. Certainly this has been the case with the Magnolia Crappie Club and many others. Many of Billy's fishing friends and business associates--Billy was the Service Mgr at a large truck equipment business in
the Jackson, MS area--have been calling to find out how they can help. Per Billy's family's request, MCC had been waiting to organize specific things that can assist Billy and his family. Now that the initial medical procedures
are past us and the path to recovery is a little more clear, his family has given us the go-ahead to organize some support projects.

A Billy Hall Fund has been set up at Trustmark Bank. Any Trustmark Bank location in the state of Mississippi can accept contributions under the name Billy Hall. You can also make a check payable to the Billy Hall Fund and
mail to the Magnolia Crappie Club, P.O. Box 4367, Brandon, MS 39047.

We'll make sure your contribution gets to Billy's account.

Additionally, MCC is holding a meeting Saturday morning, Aug 18th, 7:30 AM at the Boat Ramp Pavilion, Hwy 43, Barnett Reservoir (next to Tommy's Trading Post) to organize a volunteer group we're calling "Billy's Team". This meeting is open to all interested persons, club members or not, who would like to be a part of a group of us assisting Billy down his long road to recovery. Please come Saturday morning to hear how you can help.

Become a member of BILLY'S TEAM.
Volunteer to help a fishing friend in need.
Call 601-624-0359 or 601-624-6348 to find
    out more.

Crappie Masters note: Our thoughts and prayers are with Billy and his family. We ask that each angler help support our comrade and friend during this time of need regardless of the amount that you can contribute. Thank you.

Will do. I can vouch for 2 things. Number one, Billy is a GREAT guy, and excellent fisherman, and #2, His boat was very hard to see out of. He never took the front seats down that I know of.

It's simply tragic to say the least.
