Dog food, bread, crackers work just fine. Set it in water just deep enough to cover plus some, preferably in water that has some current, maybe the creek if it's handy.

You can't finish what you don't start
Tim, I use crackers and set mine down close to the ramp as It attracts minnows. I keep it off the side enough not to get hit and check it a few times a day[morning & evening]. Dennis

Crackers or bread and check it often.
I always used bread. Running water preferably. Check it often, but not too often.
I read an article that suggested fish flavor cat food along with a bread ball..I have done it with just the cat food and it works great! Has to be fish flavor, not beef.
Like pstone said just bread and running water.

We always used a balled up piece of bread and put it in 1.5 to 2 foot of water... Now that the whole VHS deal is going on in NY waters and with all the restrictions on baitfish, I don't bother with minnows anymore.
