    Default Clouser Questions & Pics

Ok I have made several and only 2 are finished (right bottom), but I am having some trouble getting them like I want them, but still even before I epoxy the head I would like to know if anyone like these? I also seem to have a hard time stopping short of the hook eye and need to work on that, but all have open eye. Probably should have turned them over too for the photo since the white top is the belly. I have not even finished the eyes yet.

    Any opinions?

You can watch the master himself tie it here:

I have that video already and watched it several times, but some of the things that bother me are not really addressed. Some of that has to do with how much pressure you can put on the thread and he states wrap the deer hair down firmly, but if you pull it down firm the deer hair unlike some other hair will stand straight up and not lay down.

Then I find it hard to keep the eye clean without some hair covering a part of the eye up.

I am asking for people that know what they are doing to tell me some pointers to make this cleaner and not how to tie the Clouser. I believe you can see they are tied pretty well, but I want them better! Understand these pictured are not even finished for the most part.

These will be fine and work well I am sure of that!

To help make my point here is the same fly as the one in the above pic on the left side middle, but now is finished.

Thanks, and yes I already visit each of them except the Texas Fly Fishing Report, but I will add that one to my list!

I am still looking for people here that may be different people on those boards. I am not really looking for links.

    Thumbs up

    Skip,

This has been discussed with you before in PM's. :D :D :D You really put out an excellent product with your version of the "Clouser" :D I just happen to tie mine on Jig hooks so it hangs parallel. Both of us continue to get better the more we tie them.

The Clean eye and the minnow shape are the critical areas. Thanks for your help with the epoxy head for durability. One thing I found out when tying is the principle "Less is more." The less material, the better the fly performs in the water. I also "modify" the Clouser Jig a little sometimes by adding a short marabou tail like you find in the "Crappie Candy" fly.

Using less will also make a "cleaner fly" as you requested. I alo found it helpful to add a drop of super glue at each tying step for added durability and then epoxy the head. Since my Clouser Jig targets Crappie and Panfish, I do not use Bucktail. Instead I opt for Kip Tail and marabou combinations with Krystal Flash or Squirrel and marabou combinations with Krystal flash.

For eyes I use 1/40 or 1/60 "Painted Dumbbell eyes" from Cabelas or Bead Chain from Walmart. Hook size is 1/32 crappie jig # 6 hook, or #4 through 1/0 for hooks. I have been catching my Crappies on the jig hook clouser.

Keep up the great looking jigs.

By the way, You can also take a dubbing needle, heat it up and clear the "eye" of hair and epoxy.

That is how I clean the eyes of my jigs if after I bake them the eye closes up. Since the paint is so hard I find it a lot easier to heat my bodkin to melt the paint in the eye.
