Thumbs up It's No Use If It Ain't Chartreuse

    HEY MIGHTY,

My favorite jig for catching crappie is a lightbulb bead chain eye Chartreuse and White Clouser minnow. Add some white marabou on the tail and you have a version of Crappie Candy. Flsh this under a bobber on a spinning reel with 6 lb line about four feet deep and hang on. Before I had my eye surgery last month I boated 22 nice ones at Lay Lake, Beeswax Creek area in about an hour.

If you know you're in an area that has lots of crappie and/or perch, try fishing a chartreuse, white or light gray Clouser minnow patterns in various sizes. When "panfish" are on the feed, it is difficult to keep them off a hook.

Crappie will usually suspend 4-5 feet below the surface and eat any small bait that swims over their heads. This "Jig" imitates that quite well. I think the greatest feature of the Clouser Minnow is the way the beadchain eyes cause the fly to "swim" in the water. You have some control over this motion by having control over where you place the eyes. Move them forward toward the hook eye and it swims more like a jig. Move them back toward the hook bend, and it glides through the water. It catches anything that will eat a minnow.

Here is video of fish being caught on this minnow immitator. http://youtube.com/watch?v=rY3QsLMRg74

It works great for casting the Clouser Minnow imitators at great distance. The fly will sink slowly and attract strikes.

This is old ship. This will catch Crappie, Bream, Smallmouth, Walleye and White Bass. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. "If it ain't Chartreuse, it ain't no use."

I have posted the sampling of the flies I tie along with my business card. I use Marabou and Kip tail instead of the bucktail. They undulate and pulsate much better.

Hey Old Ship... I'll pick some up next time I get into BPS and will let you know how they work for me - can't hurt to give them a try!

    Chartreuse & white, right?

    Slabmaster,

Did you use Chartreuse for the tail? I can envision white underbelly and a florescent orange dorsal. Have you tried it? I just love fishing with Clousers.

I tie some like these, but just for my self actually. I do plan on adding some of the minnow style flies to my web page, but not just Clouser even though I do like them as well. I will be a while before I am ready so show this stuff.

I am getting into some fly tying especially the little bugs for bream and will have some to show soon.

The problem I have with some of this stuff is it's too light for deep water fishing for me, but next spring it should be great fun.

    Joey

It's more fun tying them yourself. Here is video of Bob Clouser himself tying them.
