    Default Computer Guru's

I'm getting a stop error message window thats shuts down my windows xp home edition. It is a mssync20.sys file. Is this a spyware thing? I cannot run windows update, system restore, nor virus scan. Scan runs through about 70k files then shuts down. It is a big blue screen with white text and gives out alot of text that appears to be in hexadecimal. I was wondering if I might have to buy better adware program to get rid of this. I'm baffled on this one.

This is a password stealing trojan that typically runs as a service. If you have this, you really should run our standard cleaning procedures because you could have other problems and you also need to make sure you clean up all traces of the trojan. Just deleting the file (which can probably be done using PocketKillbox) will not remove the system service entry from the registry. Also note that there is typically a mssync20.exe file too which is where the mssync20.sys file is created from.

You also need to check with your finanacial institutions to look for illegal activity. Your passwords may have been stolen. The same could be true for any site you log into from this PC. All your passwords should be changed but not while using this PC to change them.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407)
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=74216)

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

    runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
    Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
    HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

mssync20.sys is a rootkit. Any rootkit remover should be able to remove it. If you don't have one, google for rootkit remover & you'll find lots.
Probably best to run a full spyware scan too.

This is one pain in the butt. I'm still not sure how I got this thing.I have founf one program that has identified this virus by name, but when I go to delete it a warning pops up and asks me if I'm sure I want to discard it, and I click no. It is a system file and I'm scared to delete it. I guess that is what I get for being on this dern thing so much.

I think I got this in a download from somewhere. You fellows might want to think about a good spyware program. GRRRRRRRRRRr

LOl, now Mr. Tom, i ain't in those sites. I had geeksquad in my puter the other day and they could't resolve the problem. The woman thought it was porn also she even check to make sure someone wasn't doing things, i was clean..:D Something must have happened when I downloaded Norton in my computer from their website. They coming over Friday morning to fix this thing, it only happens when I try to scan my puter.
